Mather LifeWays Institue on Aging Announces 2nd Annual Promising Practices Award

The Promising Practices Award highlights organizations that are moving away from conventional practices by developing and implementing new and innovative approaches in long-term care and senior living communities. The goal of this initiative is to learn “what is working” and “how it is working” from organizations that have experienced success. The promising practices developed and employed by the winners and other organizations across the country will be documented in a report that will be made available to senior living and long-term care communities.

Award Categories:

  • Culture change
  • Falls reduction
  • Wellness – brain health
  • Workforce development
  • Customer service

Past Winners:

  • Bruce McCandless State Veterans Nursing Home’s End of Life Program demonstrates the outstanding steps taken on their culture change journey. They clearly used the resources available (hospice providers, nursing staff, and spiritual advisor) to develop their own palliative care program that meets the needs of residents. The program also “provides an opportunity for caregivers, other staff, and peers to say their final goodbyes.”
  • The promising practices employed by Masonic Homes of California-Union City were: inclusion of outside agencies in their disaster plan, development of staff and resident disaster-planning teams, and identification of resources (e.g., gardens that produced fruits and vegetables, pharmacy and clinic) to sustain the community during a disaster.
  • Carroll Lutheran Village became a leader in the county’s emergency planning committee, utilized the incident command system within their community, and worked with their residents’ radio club committee to develop a communications system that would be used during a disaster.

Submissions will be accepted until November 15, 2011.
