A new book published late last year reviews the variety of factors that shape assisted living and its appeal to older consumers. The book entitled The Assisted Living Residence: A Vision For the Future, is an edited volume with contributions from recognized experts in gerontology and long term care.
The first part of the book explores diverse outlooks on the future of assisted living. For instance, the first chapter outlines the reasons why assisted living can be considered a “complex moving target”; primarily associated with an inability to predict the number of older adults who need long term care, what proportion of older adults see group residential care desirable, how many people can afford such care, and what forms of care potential customers will want.
Part II of the book examines the impact that the private sector has on assisted living residence. This section includes chapters that outline the consumer viewpoint on long-term care, that contemplate the uncertainties of the demand for assisted living, and explore the technological changes occurring in the assisted living market.
The final section of the book explores factors of the private and public sectors that have historically shaped assisted living and elder care in general.
